Clarification of rules at Stew Pond. There has been confusion regarding the use of bivvies and tents at Stew Pond. We have obtained a clear ruling from Epsom and Ewell Council that you are NOT allowed to erect any tent or bivvy at the Stew Pond. UMBRELLAS ONLY can be used as shelters & NO FIRES OF ANY DESCRIPTION ARE ALLOWED ON THIS VENUE. Bailiffs have been made aware of this.
Stew Pond
Due to unruly members of the public, Day Ticket holders as well as Members are requested to report to the EPSOM RANGERS (01372 721977 / 01372 741191) any act of vandalism seen, as these miscreants are spoiling the venue for all. PLEASE PICK UP ALL LITTER AND DISPOSE OF IN THE BINS PROVIDED OR TAKE IT HOME AS EPSOM COUNCIL ARE SERIOUSLY THINKING OF CLOSING THE VENUE DUE TO LITTER LEFT BY ANGLERS / MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
A successful day was had at the Stew Pond on 8th April when the EA came bright an early to net the pond to do a mortality check on the water, several committee members, bailiffs and members came along to assist where ever possible, with a representative from the Epsom Park Rangers. The EA removed several species of fish for their tests to be carried out at the EA,s Brompton Laboratories. (Photos Below).
The main comment from ALL the CALPAC team was that the EA could not have been a more helpful and cheerful crowd and CALPAC extends many thanks to the EA for their help.

GPS
It Has been requested that for safety sake that we publish the GPS position in our members book for each fishery in case of accidents - we do have the Ordinance Survey map ref, is there any way these can be calculated for GPS - if you have an answer to this question can you email me (see below)
It is with regret that our Pulborough Fishery has lost its only local tackle shop in the form of Carrindale which have gone into receivership, but all is not lost as our bailiff and his brother are hoping to open a tackle shop in Pulborough in the near future, so in the mean time if you are not a member and wish to fish this day ticket water you should call our Treasurer John Bygrave on 020 8777 9489 to purchase a day ticket giving at least 4 working days notice as the post is not too reliable.

Use of Keep Nets:
All Anglers, remember use of keep net is restricted to MATCHES only and certain waters, see RULE 4 (Fisheries), Club Members books & Associate Members books. During the hot weather with low oxygen levels it is detrimental to keep any fish in keep nets, please be responsible and restrict the use of keep nets to club matches only - bailiffs will enforce this ruling by asking the offender to leave the fishery.
New Record Species Claim
We keep on getting members who tell us that they have caught specimen sized fish but they don't fill in a claim form so that it can go on record that they have the 'biggest'. Run for the gills – it’s the ‘Chucklehead Cat’
By Kevin Barnes
To experience the elation of landing a giant catfish, the hardy angler once had to lavish money on holidays to the murky freshwater rivers of Florida or Virginia. Not any longer.
Because a species of north American white catfish, dubbed the Chucklehead Cat, has been recorded in British waters for the first time.
In August last year, the slippery customer was caught in a location no more exotic than The Stew Pond at Epsom Common.
The find emerged this month in a paper for the Journal of Fish Biology. Initially the 24in fish, weighing 10lb, was thought to be an albino channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), but after closer examination was identified as the less common white catfish (Ameiurus catus).
According to the paper's authors, Britton and Davies, the specimen was probably released into the wild by its owner after becoming the archetypal big fish in a small pond.
"It may be that this fish was imported mistakenly as this species and sold to an aquarium or pond owner, who subsequently introduced it into the lake, as it had perhaps outgrown its surroundings. The possibility remains that other species may be present in the wild."
Anglers expecting the medieval stew pond to be teeming with Chucklehead cat have, however, been left reeling. The fish needs temperatures above 21C to reproduce, and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have arranged for it to be removed to a more suitable location.
The stew pond was created in the 12th century by Chertsey Abbey monks and once served as Epsom's swimming baths, but today it is better known as a home to tench.
Fishy facts - White Catfish (Ameiurus catus)
Identification
A bullhead catfish, it averages eight to 18 inches. Has a moderately forked tail, a stocky blue-grey body, with a white belly and a protruding upper jaw.
Habitat
Native to warm rivers and streams flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Occasionally found in brackish and acidic waters.
Spawning habits
Spawning occurs between late May and July. Both sexes prepare the nest - a fairly large depression scoured over sand. Parents guard the eggs.
Feeding habits
Adults are omnivorous, eating a variety of aquatic invertebrates, small fishes and vegetation
A Very Important Announcement.
For ALL Existing and New *Associate* Members - The changes to the RULES should interest you and if the offer is taken up could benefit the Association as a whole, please read on.

NOTICE TO ALL CALPAC *ASSOCIATE* MEMBERS Re: UPGRADING *ASSOCIATE* MEMBERS TO FULL MEMBERSHIP STATUS At the Association’s Annual General meeting in March it was proposed to open up the management of the Association to non-affiliated club members ie *Associate* Members. Historically, in accordance with the Association’s Constitution, Officers and Committee have been drawn from affiliated clubs. Currently, *Associate* Members are precluded from attending Annual General Meetings and Delegates Meetings and to quote from rule 1 of your Guide Book, “Have no rights to vote on or make proposals in the business of the Central Association of London and Provincial Angling Clubs.” The Committee believes it is time for change especially as for some years now the ‘Associates’ have formed a significant proportion of the total membership. Accordingly, the Committee felt it both relevant and timely to recommend changes to the Rules and Constitution to enable *Associate* Members to become more actively involved in the running of the Association. The appropriate changes were implemented at the AGM to this end with immediate effect. The Committee is convinced that the greater involvement of all members has to be good for the Association. There are clearly many members with transferable skills or experience useful to the management of an Association such as ours. Any involvement whether on a formal or an 'ad-hoc' basis will be most welcome eg. As a Delegate representing those members not affiliated to any club, fishery management, or indeed, the occasional fishery working party. Hopefully, given time, those interested will allow their names to go forward for election to the committee. The Constitution has been amended allowing each affiliated member club to nominate two delegates to attend the monthly Delegates Meeting of the Association and four non–affiliated club members (previously known as *Associate* Members) may attend as Delegates representing those members also.It will be appreciated if members interested in supporting the Association either in a formal capacity as a Delegate or willing to take part in fishery maintenance/ bailiffing, etc. contact the General Secretary, Malcolm Milford- Scott, telephone 020 8645 6820 or E-mail malcolmmilfordscott@hotmail.com
